The pavement ends. The road turns to loose stone. Everything your muscle memory built on tarmac feels suddenly unreliable — and your instinct is to tighten your grip and brake hard. That instinct is exactly wrong.
Gravel is one of the most common surfaces on any real adventure route, and one of the most misunderstood. With the right technique, it stops being something to fear and becomes something you actually enjoy.
Here are the six fundamentals that make the difference.
Relax Your Grip and Your Body
Rigid hands and locked arms transmit every jolt back into the bars, fighting the bike’s natural corrections. Keep your elbows slightly bent, your grip firm but not clenched. Let the front wheel self-steer over small stones rather than forcing it. A tense rider falls; a relaxed one floats through.
Look Well Ahead — Much Further Than on Tarmac
On gravel, your stopping distance doubles and target fixation becomes a real threat. If you stare at the rock you want to avoid, you ride straight into it. Push your gaze 7–10 seconds ahead, scan continuously for ruts, loose patches, and surface changes. Your bike follows your eyes — always.
Slow Down Before Corners, Not During Them
Heavy braking mid-corner on gravel is the fastest way to wash out the front tyre. Reduce speed before the turn, carry steady throttle through it, and apply progressive power on the exit. Slow in, steady through, smooth out. If you must brake in a straight line, use the rear brake progressively — the front with extreme care.
Stand on the Pegs on Loose Ground
Standing lowers your effective centre of gravity into the frame and turns your legs into active suspension. On compact gravel you can stay seated, but the moment the surface gets loose, rutted, or uneven — stand up, weight the pegs evenly, and let your hips absorb what the bike cannot.
Minimise Lean Angle
Lean angle is your enemy on gravel. The deeper you lean, the more lateral force hits a tyre with far less grip than on tarmac. Take the widest possible line through corners, keep the bike as upright as you can, and use body lean to guide direction. Claim your line early.
Smooth Throttle — Every Single Input
Roll the throttle on progressively, like a conversation rather than a command. A sudden blip spins the rear; a sudden chop loads the front and reduces rear grip exactly when you need it. The more deliberate your inputs, the faster you will actually be able to ride.
Not All Gravel Is Equal
Compact hardpack — ride with minor adjustments. Loose fresh gravel — reduce speed significantly, double braking distances. Sand or silt — maintain momentum, avoid braking, stand on the pegs. Wet gravel — everything gets 30–40% more conservative.
How We Ride Gravel at Andries Adventures
At Andries Adventures, gravel is not an obstacle we try to avoid — it is part of what makes our tours memorable. Riding through the Gorafe Desert, descending mountain pistes in northern Morocco, or crossing the tracks of the Andalusian interior, loose surfaces are where the real adventure begins.
Our guides ride these roads every week. They know which sections demand caution, where the surface turns treacherous, and how to coach riders through technical terrain in real time. Every guided tour includes support from an expert who has ridden the route dozens of times.
If you want to go beyond gravel and develop genuine off-road skill, our enduro motorcycle tours build exactly these techniques in a structured, progressive environment — on purpose-built trails with certified instructors.
And if you want to apply them in one of the most spectacular settings in the world, our guided motorcycle tours in Morocco take you through northern Morocco’s coastal tracks and mountain pistes — terrain that covers the full gravel spectrum with a guide who knows every kilometre of it.
